Our Equine Veterinarians have years of experience in Equine Reproduction and Artificial Breeding, so you know your mare is in safe hands and that careful attention will be given to all aspects of the breeding process, to maximise the chances of a successful pregnancy.
We perform both chilled and frozen artificial insemination in mares as well as oestrus cycle management for live cover, and with our repro program we achieve very high pregnancy rates. We can perform repro scans at our Equine Hospital or we can come to your property with our mobile crush.

At Wingham & Valley Vets you can expect dedication, skill and experience.
- Our Vets have the knowledge, equipment and skill to maximise the chances of a successful insemination.
- The dedication of our Vets is second to none. We understand that our clients place their trust in us when they purchase very valuable semen and it is our duty to ensure everything possible is done to maximise the chance of a pregnancy.
- We have a state-of-the-art Equine Hospital where your mare can stay locally, to facilitate regular ultrasound scanning to perfectly time ovulation and insemination. This is essential for frozen insemination as the spermatozoa do not survive as long as with chilled insemination.
- Top quality semen straws from International Stallions can be stored on-site in our liquid nitrogen tanks, giving our clients access to some of the best Stallions in the world.
- Frozen insemination requires regular ovarian scans to precisely time the insemination so that the egg is released from the ovary at the same time as the semen is deposited into the uterine horn, since semen that has been frozen does not stay alive for as long as chilled semen.
- We would scan your mare to determine the stage of the oestrus cycle as well as assessing for uterine oedema and follicle size, then as ovulation approaches, we ultrasound scan her more frequently to pinpoint ovulation.
- Medications may be used to assist with the predictability of ovulation and maximise the chances of success.
- As soon as the mare ovulates, we perform deep intrauterine insemination into the uterine horn that is on the same side as the ovary that released the egg. Not all Vets do this, however we consider it essential with frozen semen to maximise the chances of conception taking place.
- A pregnancy scan is performed 14 days after insemination.
- Frozen inseminations incur an all-inclusive package fee, so clients are aware of the costs of inseminating their mare prior to commencement, and can rest assured that any additional scans necessary to pinpoint ovulation, will be included in the package fee and will not incur additional costs.
- Chilled insemination is a similar process to frozen, although the timing of insemination does not need to be as precise as the spermatozoa survive for much longer.
- Mares undergoing chilled insemination therefore do not need quite as many scans or to be scanned as frequently as those undergoing frozen insemination.
- Think about what Stallion you would like to use.
- Will you use chilled semen, natural cover or frozen insemination?
- Is your mare healthy and in good condition?
- Has your mare had her reproductive tract checked by an Equine Veterinarian?
- Are your mare's vaccinations up to date?
"We feel incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful and experienced Equine Reproduction Vets locally, who are not only skilled and knowledgeable, but also immensely caring and dedicated.
It was obvious to us right from the start of the process how much their Vets cared about getting a good result for us and our mares. We have enjoyed fantastic success with both frozen and chilled AI at Wingham & Valley Vets and we would not hesitate to recommend their services to anyone considering breeding their mare."
