Michael graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney in 2009 and was the recipient of the University Medal, a rare honour awarded for outstanding performance throughout the five years of the Veterinary Science degree. He joined the Wingham and Valley Vets as a Director in January 2016, after gaining a wealth of mixed practice experience first in Tasmania and then in the Hunter Valley. Michael enjoys all aspects of mixed practice and has dedicated his career to developing a skillset that is both diverse and advanced.
Michael is particularly interested in Small Animal Orthopaedic Surgery, Canine and Equine Reproduction, Dairy Herd Health, Ultrasound and all aspects of Small Animal Medicine. Michael has had considerable success with chilled and frozen AI in both horses and dogs; and he is always expanding on his knowledge of reproduction medicine.
One of Michael’s passions is continuing education and his commitment to learning helps drive progress and innovation within the Practice. Some recent courses attended include advanced fracture repair with locking plates, TPLO surgery for cranial cruciate ligament disease, canine reproduction, small animal abdominal ultrasound and thoracic imaging. Michael is a true all-rounder and a great leader for our team of veterinarians.
Michael heads our Advanced Orthopaedic Surgery service and is able to perform complex fracture repairs, TPLO (Tibial-Plateau-Levelling-Osteotomy) for cruciate disease, hip-toggle for dislocated hips, Achilles-tendon repair and tarsal/carpal arthrodesis.
Michael is an Australian Cattle Vets accredited pregnancy tester offering an ultrasound pregnancy testing service for cattle. He has completed the Countdown Mastitis course through Dairy Australia and helps to present farmer workshops and seminars with Dairy NSW on calf rearing.
Michael has also undertaken further study in the surgical correction of Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome and he greatly enjoys improving the comfort, welfare and long-term health of his patients.
Outside work, Michael loves running, touch football, hockey, tennis, following his beloved Essendon footy team, and spending time with his wife Alissa and four children; Eleanor, Susannah, Caroline & Tommy.
